Orthotics

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are devices that fit comfortably inside your shoes to try and restore normal movement and thereby restore function. Orthotics are always more successful when taken as part of a total treatment plan.

An orthotic can be a simple heel raise or a fully customised device with corrections and additions applied exactly to your needs. If a simple correction is needed an “off the shelf” device is usually enough, however, for the more complex case a fully customised device may be needed. Fully customised devices come in every shape, size, and material density imaginable. At PhysioCare we use several different manufacturers allowing us to ensure that we get the right device for you.

There are number of methods of orthotic manufacture and indeed of measurement. Examples of measurement are foam boxes, casting, 3D scanning, and pressure plate scanning. Each method has its own merits and will be dependent on your exact problem. We have the equipment to assess your foot using any of these methods and it will depend on you and your problem.

  • Some Simple Facts:

Did you know that the average human being takes about 6,000 steps per day? That adds up to about 115,000 miles in a lifetime or more than four times around the world. That is a lot of walking with ill-fitting shoes or painful feet!!

Do you realise that if you are 30lbs overweight, you carry in excess of 150,000lbs per day? One stone overweight equals 70,000 lbs per day?

If you live to 80 years of age, you will have walked approximately 460,000 miles – that’s if you’re not very active!

Would you expect your car to clock up 460,000 miles without having it serviced?

Do you expect your precious feet to propel you 460,000 miles without having a biomechanical assessment?

Be kind to your feet. Choose footwear that affords you maximum shock absorption and mobility. Avoid walking on a non shock- absorbing, hostile environment i.e. concrete.

The peak pressure generated when you run can be 4 times your body weight. Imagine 75kgs x 4 going through your big toe!!!

    Do I need Orthotics?

    The million dollar question!
In the end it is always YOUR decision. It is YOUR body so YOU decide how to deal with it.
It the USA, Australia, and the Scandinavian countries, the % population with orthotics is significantly higher than here. Irish health insurers are increasingly aware of the significant benefits they can bring with some a covering the total cost.
